EU GreenLight logo for Salzburg

With its exemplary commitment in the area of lighting efficiency, the festival city of Salzburg is now not only a world-famous cultural centre, but also an international model for energy-saving lighting.

The Salzburg municipal authority, for many years a customer of Philips Lighting, is the first local authority in Austria to be awarded the GreenLight logo by the EU for their energy-saving municipal lighting. EU GreenLight is a Europe-wide programme aimed at promoting energy-efficient lighting within private and public institutions.

In total, around 18,000 light sources with an energy consumption of 10.3 gigawatt-hours per year are maintained within the municipal area. Thanks to the energy-saving measures this currently costs the municipal authorities around EUR 1.42m. Without these activities, the costs would be some 40 per cent higher.

Philips technology saves energy

Lighting solutions from Philips Lighting have made a substantial contribution to this success. MASTER Colour City CDM-T lamps in over a thousand Old Quarter street lamps accentuate the atmosphere of the old Salzburg town centre with their pleasant light while saving energy at the same time. Because of its high light yield, economical operation and reliability, the MASTER SON PIA-lamp has become an indispensable part of Salzburg's street lighting.

Around 300 street lamps have already been equipped with energy-saving CHRONOSENSE controllers. Over the next few years, up to 2000 street lamps will be equipped as part of the ongoing upgrading.

Since March 2002, a switching centre in the lighting network has been controlled by means of the Philips telemanagement lighting control system STARSENSE, which opens up a series of potential savings in energy and maintenance costs. "During 2002, we were able to achieve savings of around 25 per cent in the district in question," explains Ing. Bruno Wintersteller, departmental manager for public lighting on Salzburg town council.
